"We get a lot of music through New Reviews, but when Alchemy sent their EP ‘Modern Reality’ to me, it was a breath of fresh air in the stack of similar indie music out there at the moment.
The intermeshing of Ellen’s and Taj’s vocals is something very different and special. Think Florence and Dizzee for a similar soulful singing/ rap mix, but Alchemy inject their own hint of old school hip hop.
‘My Love’ is one of my favourite songs for this; the lyrics are catchy and honest and Ellen’s voice is absolutely stunning. ‘Mea Culpa’ follows on a similar line with the broken love story lyrics nicely fitting with our singers competing vocals. This song sticks with you, and I found myself singing it for some time after.
The EP was made in only one take over ten hours as the band wanted to capture the essence of their live sound, as well as their creativity and diversity, and this is evident in their sound. It’s raw and fresh, and could occasionally do with more polishing but it does give the live feeling they were aiming for.
‘Modern Reality’ picks up the beat with Taj’s hard-hitting rhymes complemented by some seriously soulful guitar. The last song of the EP is ‘Sans Me Parler’ (Promise Falls), which I felt took me instantly back to the early nineties.
Definitely one to check out, a different, fun band which I’m sure will keep developing great music as they further explore the sounds they have to play with.
Check out their facebook page now."
